Teaching Philosophies/Principles

Universal Design Learning (UDL)
"What works for one will work for many."

This educational framework aims to optimize teaching and learning for all students by providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression.
It emphasizes the need for flexible learning environments that can accommodate individual learning differences. UDL encourages educators to present information in various ways to cater to diverse learning styles.
It also promotes offering students different methods to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
This educational approach focuses on developing students' emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and self-awareness.
It aims to help students understand and manage their emotions, set and achieve positive goals, and feel and show empathy for others.
SEL fosters strong relationships by teaching students how to establish and maintain healthy relationships and make responsible decisions.
This approach is integrated into the curriculum to create a supportive and collaborative learning environment.

It prepares students to navigate social complexities and succeed both academically and personally.

Culturally Responsive Teaching
This educational approach recognizes the importance of including students' cultural references in all aspects of learning.
It aims to create an inclusive classroom environment where diverse cultural backgrounds are valued and respected.
CRT involves using cultural knowledge, prior experiences, and performance styles of diverse students to make learning more appropriate and effective. It encourages teachers to adapt their teaching methods to better meet the needs of all students.
It seeks to improve educational outcomes by making learning more relevant and engaging for students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Person-First Classroom
I prioritize my students' learning by recognizing them as people first and
students second.
My focus is on supporting their well-being and building meaningful connections, creating a foundation for a more effective and compassionate learning environment.

Embracing the Journey Makes the Ride Easier
This principle supports the notion that each of us has the ability to control
the attitude we take to each situation and the effort we put into it.

Good Discipline Requires Short-Term Solutions Without Sacrificing
Long-Term Goals
This principle focuses on the necessary, basic, unfulfilled needs that all students have.
The goal of this principle is to identify those unfulfilled needs that
are causing the behavior and then address them regularly through both the curriculum and interactions with the student.

Being Fair Does Not Always Mean Treating Students Equally
I firmly believe that a "one-size-fits-all" approach is ineffective, especially in
education.
That’s why I support this principle, which empowers students by
giving them choices in how they solve problems, allowing them to discover
and apply the solutions that work best for them.

Visual Literacy
It is the ability to interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of images.
It involves understanding and critically analyzing visual messages in various media, such as photographs, diagrams, videos, and artworks.
Visual literacy emphasizes the importance of teaching students to decode visual content, recognize visual conventions, and appreciate the role of visuals in communication.
It encourages the development of skills to create effective visual content for conveying messages. Ultimately, visual literacy enhances students' ability to engage with and understand the increasingly visual world around them.
