Below are my lesson plans, organized according to certain curriculum. Check them out!

Cultural Component Art Lessons

Lesson plans that use a variety of art media and represent a variety of grade levels, the following include a cultural component.

 

Artist Trading Cards (ATC): 

Grade Level: 3rd-5th

Art Media Used: Mixed Media including but not limited to, paint, lace, fabric, watercolor, pen, graphite, and buttons.

Art Concept(s): Media manipulation. Students experiment with artistic foundations to begin or further develop their use of the foundations as a baseline for their own authentic and artistic voice.  

MN Art Standard:

Grade 3: 5.3.2.2.2 Apply knowledge of available resources, tools, and technologies to investigate ideas through the artmaking process. 

Grade 4: 5.4.2.2.2 Incorporate personal choice into devising a solution for a creative problem.

Grade 5: 5.5.2.2.2 Generate plans for art that investigates a social, cultural, or personal theme.

Fashion and Culture:

Grade Level: 3rd - 5th

Art Media Used: Loom (bought or made from cardboard or a paper plate) as well as weaving materials of your choice (e.g, cloth or yarn).

Art Concept(s): Students will learn about the language of color and pattern, and how that ‘language’ can shift depending on cultural background and understanding. They will examine how they interpret color, look at how those same colors are interpreted around the world, then look closely at the colors, patterns, and symbology of Kente cloth.

MN Art Standard:

Grade 3: 5.3.5.10.1 Recognize that responses to art change depending on the knowledge of the time and place in which it was made.

Grade 4: 5.4.5.10.1 Identify how art is used to inform or change the beliefs, values, or behaviors of an individual or society.

Drawing Strategies

Lesson plans that use a variety of art media and represent a variety of grade levels, the following include a drawing strategy.

 

Capturing Subjects in a Sketchbook

Grade Level(s): 5th

Art Media Used: Hardcover sketchbook, various grades of graphite pencils, kneaded and vinyl erasers, pencil sharpeners, and sandpaper block.

Art Concept(s): Shape, form, texture, and space. Visually examining surroundings and then translating them onto paper; examining subjects, sketching proportions, and adding additional outlines and details. 

MN Art Standard: 5.5.2.3.1 Using artistic foundations, create art that redesigns artworks, objects, places, or systems​
 

Interdisciplinary Connection Art Lessons

Lesson plans that use a variety of art media and represent a variety of grade levels, the following include an interdisciplinary connection. 

 

Action Art: Inspiring Positive Change Through Art

Grade Level(s): 5th 

Art Media UsedPaint (tempera, acrylic), Drawing media (pencils, oil pastels, markers, chalk) , Substrates (canvas, canvas board, paper, cardboard), Adhesives (gloss and matte medium, glue, hot glue, tape),  Miscellaneous (ephemera, wire, patterned or painted papers, found objects, stickers, stencils).

Art Concept(s): Students will be able to formulate, categorize and prioritize questions and create a work of art that addresses an issue of personal interest.

MN Art Standard: 5.5.2.2.2 Generate plans for art that investigates a social, cultural, or personal theme.

5.5.2.3.2 Explain the ethical responsibility of appropriation in artmaking.

Interdisciplinary Connection: Social Justice and Self Advocacy.

 

Character Education

Grade Level(s): 5th

Art Media Used: Collection of books with photos of animals or locate photos from magazines and other classroom resources. Mixed media supplies include but are not limited to: found objects, plastic containers, paper towel tubes, old tools and bolts, foil, ribbons, utility/matte knives, scissors, resin, pins, masking tape...etc.

Art Concept(s): Interpreting the expressive content of the different artworks. Discuss and define what a family unit consists of, and form conclusions of their own. Identify and consider methods of communication family members use to express love and caring. Demonstrate an understanding of how people communicate at home. Report reactions and responses received. Transform found objects and materials into a new three-dimensional construction using the assemblage method pioneered by Picasso.

MN Art Standard: 5.5.2.2.2  Generate plans for art that investigates a social, cultural, or personal theme.

5.5.2.4.1 Create artist statements to describe choices in artmaking, using art vocabulary. 

5.5.4.7.1 Identify and interpret works of art that reveal how people live around the world and what they value.

5.5.5.9.1 Use knowledge of one's own culture and heritage to explore personal identity. 

Interdisciplinary Connection: Self Advocacy and Family Responsibility and Commitment.

A Day in a Life: Clementine Hunter

Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade.

Art Media UsedPaint (washable tempera), Drawing media (pencils and erasers), Found substrates (cardboard, wood slabs, recycled paper, boards).

Art Concept(s): Students will be able to create an everyday moment in their lives using space and color. 

MN Art Standard: 5.3.2.3.1 Students will be able to create visual representations of places or systems that are a part of everyday life using artistic foundations.
